My artwork is initiated by a cognitive response to a visual balance. My method of abstracting my work is focused on the appearance of patterns, textures and composition that forms a narrative. I begin by creating small scale studies to help recognize how balance of the composition can be navigated in large scale work. I utilize rigid textures along with a smooth finish surface to give a contrasting look to the artwork. This allows me to use a natural mark making that is recognizable throughout my work and develop an understanding of my process on how I construct my pieces. The use of torn organic and geometric shapes to collage them over provides a motion of layering within the artwork itself giving a different visual of textures. The focal point of the artwork is to be developed with the momentum of where the eye travels to finalize the piece; either to aim for a symmetrical or asymmetrical appeal. The shapes I cycle throughout are the circle and triangle: these two geometric shapes indicate rotation, phases and consistent pattern of method I maintain within my work. The material I use throughout is kraft paper, canvas cutouts, printed media, copper wires, cardboard and found objects. The color palette is presented in black and white, grayscale or colors that sink to a muted or dark tone. Using a contrasting approach of transitions that alter from coarse and organic to smooth and geometric to recognize a cohesive appreciation of balance within.
